Last Thursday marked the final presentations of our Data Science for Social Good (DSSG) Fellows, concluding an intensive 14-week, full-time program. Throughout the summer, they worked closely with project sponsors to tackle real-world social impact challenges, while deepening their skills in data science under the guidance of DSI Director and Data Scientists.
Despite all of the projects being outside their academic backgrounds, the DSSG Fellows quickly adapted and expanded their domain knowledge—all while building strong teamwork and communication skills. The program also included various team-building and/or educational activities like wall climbing and a visit to the UBC Botanical Garden and Museum of Anthropology.
This year also marked a milestone: for the first time in the program’s 9-year history, 2 DSSG fellows collaborated with students from the University of Hong Kong (HKU). Thanks to generous support from HKU, the 2 DSSG Fellows had the unique opportunity to work across continents—visiting Hong Kong in June and welcoming HKU students to UBC for the final two weeks of the program and presentations.
We’re incredibly proud of what this year's DSSG Fellows have achieved. Here's to the next generation of data scientists committed to social good!
